How does this work?
After we prepare the tooth for a crown (and you leave with a temporary crown), the crown itself is made in the lab. It is made to be a Cinderella slipper that fits perfectly over the top of the tooth and matches the way the rest of your teeth bite. It is custom tailored to the color of your other teeth to match. Because it’s a cap over the top of the whole tooth, it helps protect the tooth from future decay and also strengthens the structure of the tooth. Crowns can last for decades if properly made and cared for!
Tooth colored crowns (E-Max/Zirconia):
These crowns are made out of extremely strong materials , and they can be made even tougher than your actual teeth! Also with modern techniques, the aesthetic result can be amazing. Not only does it match the color of the other teeth, it can also be made to match the translucency to make them almost indiscernible from their adjacent partners.
Because they are so strong, they let Dr. Voss preserve more of your natural tooth because the “cap” on your tooth can be made thinner.

So, why gold crowns? Gold crowns have been the gold standard (pun intended), and not just because you can use it as a backup retirement fund. They have maintained their popularity for one key reason – they are almost exactly as hard as your teeth themselves. This means if you grind your teeth at night, it will wear at the same rate as your natural teeth. Also, because it’s a softer material, it gradually wears away instead of chipping off in chunks when put under high stresses. So though it’s not as visually pleasing for some, it is an amazing material, and a great choice especially for your molars. You do over 80% of your chewing on your 1st and 2nd molars alone!
We lower our fee for gold crowns to be the same affordable price as for our tooth colored crowns even though gold costs more to make. We want our patients to make the best possible decision for themselves and their mouths. Both types of crowns are great options for completely different reasons!
Bridges:
Bridges work much like crowns, but they go over the 2 teeth next door and have a “floating tooth” (or multiple “floating teeth”) in the middle. These are a good alternative in situations where someone is missing a tooth and where an implant (to replace the tooth) or orthodontic treatment (to move other teeth into this space) may not be feasible.
