Tongued Tied and Speech Issues
Speech issues come in many shapes and colors, but one of the most common is speech issues related to being tongue tied. As much as 10% of the population suffer from a tight lingual frenum (being tongue tied), and most of them don’t even know that there is a simple solution for it!
Ankyloglossia is a fancy word for having a very tight connection between the bottom of your mouth and your tongue. Because the tongue is “tied” to the floor of the mouth (by a long thin attachment called the lingual frenum), it is often difficult to lift the tongue to the roof of the mouth or to stick it between the teeth, resulting in speech issues including difficulty with the “r” and “s” sounds. By relieving this tension, the tongue can much more easily move around, improving speech and also making speech therapy much more effective. More info on being tongue tied.
To fix a tongue tied condition, a laser is used to quickly and easily sever the part of the frenum that is tying the tongue to the floor of the mouth, allowing it to move more freely. After getting numb, the procedure takes a mere 5 minutes with our talented Dr. Cox.
Frenectomy (also commonly referred to as frenotomy or frenulotomy) and vestibuloplasty can be used to improve many issues. These tight attachments can cause speech issues, gum recession, persistent orthodontic issues that can be very difficult to treat, difficulty breastfeeding for infants, and many other problem.
